Understanding Printer Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

The price of a printer is only part of what it costs your business. Total Cost of Ownership considers the ongoing costs of operating the device over its useful life, helping you compare solutions more accurately and avoid unexpected expenditure.

Consumables & Toner Yield

Consider toner and other consumable costs together with their expected page yields.

Maintenance & Servicing

Repairs, servicing, replacement parts and warranties all contribute to lifetime cost.

Electricity Consumption

Power usage contributes to the ongoing operating cost of a printer or multifunction device.

Paper Consumption

Print habits, duplex printing and device settings influence how much paper your business uses.

User Intervention

Time spent replacing consumables, resolving faults and managing devices can carry a business cost.

Installation & Device Life

Delivery, installation, servicing and expected useful life should form part of your comparison.

Understanding 5% Toner Page Coverage

Manufacturer toner yields are generally stated using a standard page-coverage assumption. Actual yield varies according to what you print. Pages with large shaded areas, graphics or heavier text coverage use more toner than lightly printed pages.

For example, if a cartridge is rated for 2,500 pages at 5% coverage and your typical pages average approximately 15% coverage:

15 ÷ 5 = 32,500 ÷ 3 ≈ 833 pages

This is a rough planning calculation rather than a guaranteed cartridge yield, because actual usage varies by printer, document type and operating conditions.
